Your MRI Experience at Canopy Imaging
What to expect and how to prepare for your MRI scan
We understand that undergoing your first MRI scan can be an unfamiliar and potentially unsettling experience. However, we want to assure you that you are in expert hands, and your well-being is our utmost priority. MRI scans are a routine procedure that countless individuals undergo every day. Read on as we address common concerns as it may alleviate some of your nervousness.
What is an MRI?
An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive imaging technique that captures detailed images of the inside of your body. It allows our specialist radiologists, and your healthcare provider to clearly visualise your organs, tissues, and bones, without using ionising radiation.
Is an MRI uncomfortable?
The team at Canopy Imaging are dedicated to ensuring your comfort throughout the MRI scan process. They will explain every step to you and address any questions or concerns you may have before, during, and after the procedure.
You will lie comfortably on a padded table that slides into the open, circular shaped scanner. There are no injections or procedures involved, unless your scan requires contrast dye, which will be explained to you beforehand.
Is an MRI safe?
MRI scans are widely recognised as one of the safest imaging methods available, and do not use ionising radiation like X-rays or CT scans . This makes them suitable for repeated examinations if your doctor needs ongoing insight into your condition.
Because the MRI machine uses a strong magnet, it is important we know about any metallic implants or devices you may have. For example, metal plates, pins, or pacemakers can affect your safety in the scanner. That is why we will ask you about any past surgeries or injuries, it is surprising how often small details can be forgotten, so we encourage you to share as much information as possible. And we will ask you multiple times for safety purposes!
How can Canopy Imaging help, what happens if you feel claustrophobic?
Your comfort is our priority. Our friendly team will take the time to explain what will happen before, during, and after your scan. If you have any questions or feel unsure about anything, please do not hesitate to ask. We want you to feel informed and confident.
If you have any concerns about claustrophobia, we completely understand. Our MRI machines are designed with large openings to help reduce the feeling of being enclosed, and our rooms are calming . If needed, we can also provide additional support to help you feel at ease during the procedure. Just let us know ahead of time.
If you have been referred for an MRI and still have questions, please feel free to contact us or speak to your referring doctor. At Canopy Imaging, your health, comfort, and peace of mind are always at the heart of what we do.
